Extra, Adjustment and Clearing
UCAS Extra
If a student decides to decline all their offers or doesn't receive any, then provided that all the original 5 choices have been made, they will be eligible for UCAS Extra, which will appear on their Track account. This allows further opportunities to secure a place.
Extra begins towards the end of February. A course search on the UCAS website will indicate which courses have places available.
It is possible to apply for any course, but if a student decides to change significantly from their original subject, the process will need careful managing as their personal statement will not match. Get advice!
The student contacts their chosen institution to discuss the application, and if a favourable response is received they will enter the relevant details on Track. Once the offer is received, the student will accept this as their Conditional Firm choice. It is not possible to arrange an insurance choice.
The student can continue to approach institutions one by one until a place is secured up until early July, when if they have not obtained a place they will go into Clearing.
Clearing
When the applications deadline of 30th June has passed, and Extra finishes, students who do not have a place will be eligible for Clearing, which begins on the A level results day in mid-August. All remaining vacancies are published on the UCAS website. Applicants can apply for places by contacting the relevant institution by telephone and discussing details. As with Extra, it is possible to apply for any vacancy through Clearing. Make sure you have your UCAS reference number accessible.
After favourable negotiations, a student enters the relevant course and institution details on their Track account, which are then forwarded for checking and confirmation by the institution.
Adjustment
Adjustment occurs when a student's results exceed the conditions of their Firm Choice (which at this point will have been confirmed). They will then have the opportunity to negotiate a place at another institution if they wish to, whilst still holding their original. Adjustment runs from A level results day until 31st August and eligible students will be able to register through their Track account. There are pros and cons to this, so take some advice.
